As the Complex Claims Specialist, you will be responsible for providing specialised technical expertise in the day to day handling of complex claims on behalf of clients.

Key responsibilities

  • Proactively manage own portfolio of complex claims from notification to closure, investing the necessary level of involvement required for each claim
  • Regular reviews of individual claims within the portfolio and keep all records up to date as per policies and procedures
  • Building strong relationships with underwriters and provide input on any claims issues or trends and improvements where necessary
  • Building strong relationships with broking and claims team and assist with technical advice on claims handling, policy coverage and policy interpretations
  • Key point of contact and advise on all complex claims
  • Review of all incoming declines in conjunction with the claims team members to guide on next steps
  • Assist Team Leader in claims reporting at monthly business meetings and discussing any trends or concerns
  • Assisting team (Broking and Claims Team) with claims reviews, policy interpretations so as to achieve the best outcome for clients
  • Review and handling of indemnity disputes/declinatures and drafting submissions to insurers to achieve best possible outcomes for clients
  • Assisting clients with IDR and AFCA when indicated and required
  • Mentor and upskill claims team in complex claims handling and dispute resolution
  • Take a lead role in implementing initiatives/changes to help achieve claims strategy and develop a high performance cultur

Key skills and experience


You will have sound knowledge across claims management, and strong technical skills across general insurance, including Liability, PI, Construction, ML) gained either through a Broking and/or Underwriting operation.

As well as the above, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in a business related discipline / Legal (preferable but not essential)
  • Experience in negotiating favourable claims settlements for client
  • Experience in reviewing and managing indemnity disputes and claims declinatures across all classes of insurance, broader experience in liability or PI required
  • Experience in interpreting and applying policy wordings
  • Experience in identifying potential coverage challenges and escalating for review
  • Experience in managing IDR and AFCA disputes (preferably but not essential)
  • Sound analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Good communicator
  • Attention to detail
  • Competent in Microsoft Office programs – Word, Excel, and Outlook
